A big crowd of more than 60,000 people cheered Pope Francis on, as he made his way through St. Peter's Square in the popemobile. Along the way, he blessed many children, he greeted pilgrims and he even made a good catch.
In his catechesis, the Pope talked about marriage. It's no coincidence he said, that Jesus chose a marriage reception to perform his first miracle and turn water into wine.
POPE FRANCIS
'This is how Jesus shows us that the masterpiece of society is the family. A man and a woman who love each other. This is the one masterpiece!â?
Couples, he added need to trust the bond of marriage and not let fear of failure take over.
With more separated couples and less births in many countries, the best way to rediscover hope in marriage, he added, is through the example of good Christians spouses and their families.
POPE FRANCIS
'Why aren't young people getting married? Why do they prefer to live together and often times with limited responsibility? Many couples, even the Baptized are showing little faith in marriage and in the family.â?
It's an issue, he explained that requires deeper reflection. The economic crisis and women's growing independence, he added, are not to blame.
POPE FRANCIS
'This argument is not valid. It's a lie. It's not true. It's based on chauvinism, a way to dominate women. We risk making the same mistake as Adam. When God asks him, 'Why did you eat the fruit?' He answers, 'She gave it to me. It was her fault. Poor women, we have to defend them, ok?â?
In his next catechesis the Pope will once again focus on the family. In this series, he has touched on the complimentary roles of men and women and the importance of marriage for individuals and for society.
