During his Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis called on Europe to take bold steps in the face of a burgeoning refugee crisis.
POPE FRANCIS
'May every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every shrine of Europe welcome one family.â?
The Pope's plea came as the continent is faced with one of its worst refugee crises in recent memory. Millions of people have fled turmoil in Syria, Iraq, and other countries. Thousands of them have made a dangerous journey to Europe, though their future on the continent remains uncertain.
Helping the refugees is a moral imperative, Pope Francis explained. He warned that concrete steps need to be taken.
POPE FRANCIS
'Faced with the tragedy of tens of thousands of refugees who flee death from war and hunger, and who have begun a journey moved by vital hope, the Gospel calls us to be 'neighbors' of the weakest and the abandoned. To give them concrete hope. Itâ??s not enough to say, 'Take heart. Be patient.' Christian hope has a fighting spirit, with the tenacity of one who goes toward a sure goal.â?
And the Pope is doing more than speaking. He's also setting an example. Two parishes in the Vatican will be receiving and helping two families of refugees.
