During his first Wednesday audience in August, Pope Francis sent a special message to the Brazilian pilgrims, especially those from Rio de Janeiro, who will host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games on August 5.

'In a world that thirsts for peace, tolerance and reconciliation, I hope that the spirit of the Olympic Games will inspire everyone, participants and spectators, to fight 'the good fight' and finish the race together. That they will desire to achieve not only a medal as a reward, but something much more valuable: the creation of a civilization where solidarity reigns, based on the recognition that we are all members of one human family, regardless of differences in culture, skin color or religion.â?
After witnessing the global youth uniting at WYD in Krakow, the Pope also conveyed this idea of fraternity and togetherness in his monthly 'Pope Video,â? which states his prayer intentions for the month of August. This month he focused on praying for brotherhood through friendly competition found in sports.
He also commented on the common characteristics portrayed by Brazilians, thanking them for the joy, hope and hospitality they show to the world. The Pope extended his wish that the games will help them overcome difficult political situations in their country.

'And for Brazilians, who with their characteristics of joy and hospitality are organizing the sports festival, I hope that this is an opportunity to overcome the difficult times and engage in 'teamwork' for the construction of a fairer and safer country, betting on a future filled with hope and joy. Surely now, with the addition of a papal blessing, the Olympic Games will have a good run from August 5 until August 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
