On February 17, 1967, just two years after the Second Vatican Council, a group of students in the United States participated in a spiritual retreat.

The experience they had there was the beginning of what is now known as the Charismatic Movement. Today, it is one of the largest growing Catholic movements amid an increasingly agnostic world, and there are over 120 million in the movement.

MICHELLE MORAN
International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Service
'They experienced the personal love of Jesus, just an overwhelming sense of the presence of the Holy Spirit.'

SALVATORE MARTINEZ
President of The Charismatic Renewal (Italy)
'The Charismatic Renewal starts from the bottom, from the testimony of some young students and reaches all corners of the world, to more than 200 countries.'

The center of Catholic Charismatic Renewal is the Holy Spirit. Their goal is to recreate the experience the apostles had at the Pentecost.

Their style has not always been well-accepted, but popes such as Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI all met with them.

Their musicality did not go unnoticed by Jorge Mario Bergoglio when he was in Buenos Aires. In 2014, he personally told them what kind of impression they had left on him.

POPE FRANCIS
'I used to describe the Charismatic movement as a samba dance school. I didn't like its way of prayer or the new elements it brought to the Church. But afterwards, I got to know some of its members, and I saw the good it brings to the Church.

The Charismatic Movement has also spread among non-Catholic Christians, many of whom are in Rome to celebrate.

That is why Charismatic Renewal is one of the most active movements in the ecumenical field.
