This small pocket guide can be a lifesaver for those who need a hand in a large city like Rome.

The “DOVE,” “WHERE TO” guide, provides information on where to eat, sleep and wash up.

“We began publishing it more than 30 years ago in Rome. It has now been replicated in many cities in Italy, Europe and the world, from Buenos Aires to Warsaw. It has been nicknamed ‘The Michelin guide of the poor,' and they're the ones who update it every year. Every year it is enriched with new places. Every year it is improved.”

It offers information on where to find the best places to eat, where lines are shorter, and even where to find friendlier treatment.

“This year has been different because everything had to be redesigned as a result of the pandemic.

Some places had to limit their opening hours. Food distribution centers have been reduced, and only take-out meals are being distributed.”

The guide can also be downloaded from the Community of Sant’Egidio's website. There is even an app available.

“It is beneficial to know what to do amid bureaucracy that complicates everything. It is challenging for citizens in general, and more so for the poor who constantly look for solutions to survive. Bureaucracy is a labyrinth. In the guide, we give many useful tips and suggestions. Everything from how and where to look for a job, how to apply for specific aid or what to do to be entitled to health care.”

The guide is dedicated to Modesta Valenti, a homeless woman who the Roman health services refused to admit because of her poor condition. She died on Jan. 31, 1983. This day is now known as the day of remembrance for those who have died on the streets.

Years later, the Mayor’s Office in Rome declared that homeless people could use Modesta Valenti, a virtual street, as a legal address when filling out documents.
