Carlo Acutis, Chiara Badano among the patrons of World Youth Day Lisbon 2023

Carlo Acutis and Chiara Badano will be among the 13 patrons of World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon. They were announced by Cardinal Manuel Clemente, patriarch of Lisbon.

The Cardinal described Chiara Bandano as a young woman who radiated a luminous joy symbolized by her second name: "Luce," or Light.

He also highighted Carlo Acutis' love for Our Lady and the Eucharist. He said that "he made his suffering an offering and he was happy."

Cardinal Clemente says both were young people who died of illnesses that immobilized their bodies but not their hearts.

The Virgin Mary is the principal patroness of World Youth Day. Other patrons include three Portuguese blesseds: Joana of Portugal, João Fernandes, and Maria Clara of the Child Jesus.

For the first time, the host country's dioceses chose the event's patron saints. With this, each one picked saints that represent the reality of their diocese.
