Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Spanish Cardinal José Luis Lacunza as the bishop of David, Panama. On February 1, he was found disoriented in his vehicle 29 miles from his residence, 48 hours after disappearing.

During a Mass, the Cardinal apologized for his disappearance. He said it was a (quote) “stupid prank” that he did ahead of his birthday.

Cardinal Lacunza will turn 80 on February 24, which could also explain his resignation. But the Vatican has not commented on the reasons behind his decison to step down. The new bishop of David will be Fr. Enrique Saldaña Guerra.
