The Italian authorities typically increase security measures ahead of Holy Week, particularly for papal events at the Colosseum or St. Peter's. This is in addition to the usual security checks at the Vatican before entering the Square.

This year, half a million pilgrims are expected to pass through the Eternal City during these days—one of the highest numbers in recent years.

The Ministry of the Interior decided to increase security, especially in the wake of the attack in Moscow and the conflict in Gaza. Since October 7, Italy has expelled 47 people from the country for security reasons. Hundreds of security personnel will be stationed in the coming days in the most sensitive areas of Rome.
