Thousands of people from all around the world came to witness Pope Leo the 14th's first public Wednesday audience.
Saint Peter's Square was packed, which caused concern that the crowd would become chaotic, but according to visitors who attended, the feeling was quite the opposite.
"But just being here is wonderful. We're elated. It's just such a wonderful feeling, all the people from everywhere. And they're friendly. Very friendly, very nice, no pushing of each other."
In fact, many people within the crowd were overcome with emotion at the sight of the new Pope and upon hearing his message.
"It was surreal. I couldn't believe I was experiencing it. I couldn't believe he was right in front of us. I teared up thinking about him giving us his blessing. A beautiful experience."
"But I like the idea that he cares about people, all people. That's beautiful. Makes me cry."
Pope Leo's message to the crowd focused on peace and the parable of the sower. He invited the crowd to never limit how much love they give in their lives.
POPE LEO XVI
We are used to calculating things – and at times it is necessary – but this does not apply in love.
This call to love was apparently felt by the audience. Father Tomasz Podlewsk had a front row seat for Pope Leo's first Wednesday audience.
"The last thing for me (that's) important is that Pope Leo loves Jesus very much. He has a very deep relationship with Jesus, and this is the source of his closeness to people. I am very happy that Jesus gave us this Pope for this time."
Many left with the feeling that Pope Leo's pontificate will be a great example of spiritual and human love.
