Pope Leo XIV met in a private audience with the young people from Egypt following the news of the death of Pascale Rafic, an 18-year-old Egyptian pilgrim.

Pascale, who was participating in the Jubilee of Youth in Rome, suffered a heart attack while traveling by bus to her accommodation. Although she was rushed by ambulance to the hospital, she passed away en route.

Pope Leo XIV encouraged the young people to support one another in their grief, to pray for Pascale, and to renew their faith in the context of the Jubilee Year of Hope. Speaking spontaneously, the Pope reminded them that faith in Jesus Christ—especially in His resurrection—is “the ultimate source of our hope.”

He concluded with a blessing, asking that God’s grace and protection accompany them for the rest of their pilgrimage. The pontiff also reached out to the young woman’s family to offer his condolences.
