On the feast of Saint Stephen, who is the first recorded martyr of the Catholic Church, the Pope presided over the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square on the day after Christmas. There he spoke about the mysterious joy of this festive season.

POPE LEO XIV

The Mystery of Christmas brings us this joy: a joy inspired by the perseverance of those who already live fraternity, of those who already recognize around them—even in their own adversaries—the indelible dignity of daughters and sons of God.

Recognizing the joy to which all Christians are called, Pope Leo remained wary of the constant uncertainty in which the world finds itself.

POPE LEO XIV

In the conditions of uncertainty and suffering of today’s world, joy might seem impossible.

It is a reality that should not discourage the faithful but should, on the contrary, encourage us to continue following the message of Christ.

Besides the Angelus gathering on Saturday, the Pope also celebrated the last Sunday of the year, which is the Feast of the Holy Family.

POPE LEO XIV

As we contemplate this mystery with wonder and gratitude, we think of our families and of the light that can also come from them for the society in which we live.

In a sunny St. Peter’s Square, crowded with families and pilgrims, Pope Leo recalled the special role of the Holy Family as the cradle of salvation.
