Pope Leo XIV shared his weekly public catechesis with the faithful present in the Paul VI Hall, focused on the conciliar Constitution, Dei Verbum.
The Pontiff spoke on the way that God communicates with humanity through the Scriptures.
POPE LEO XIV
This shows us that God is benevolent, close, and merciful, not only in the content of His message but also in the way He expresses it. That is, in the language He uses, which is accessible to all people.
During this moment of encounter with the faithful, Pope Leo XIV also took the opportunity to address current global issues. One essential point was to express his closeness to the Ukrainian people, asking for prayers for all of them:
POPE LEO XIV
I urge everyone to support our brothers and sisters in Ukraine with prayer, who have been harshly affected by the consequences of the bombings, which have also struck energy infrastructure.
In addition, the Pope thanked the initiatives of solidarity being carried out by the Catholic Diocese of Poland and other countries, aimed at helping the Ukrainian population cope with severe weather conditions amidst the winter cold.
In the same line of thought, he recalled the importance of nuclear arms control and expressed his concern about the expiration of the New START treaty on February 5—a treaty that represented a significant step forward in nuclear peace.
POPE LEO XIV
Signed in 2010 by the presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation, it represented a significant step toward containing the spread of nuclear weapons. By courageously renewing a constructive effort in favor of disarmament and mutual trust, I make a strong appeal not to allow this instrument to lapse without seeking to ensure a concrete and effective follow-up.
With this appeal, Pope Leo XIV concluded his catechesis by underscoring the importance of solidarity, prayer, and international cooperation. He recalled that agreements such as the New START treaty are fundamental to world peace, and he urged leaders and international communities to renew similar treaties with firm commitment.
