Without being blunt, Pope Leo XIV reiterated the importance of respecting every child’s right to have a father and a mother — not two fathers or two mothers.

He made the remarks while meeting with the organizing committee of the initiative “From Crisis to Care: Catholic Action in Favor of Children.”

There, he recalled point 172 of Pope Francis’ document Amoris Laetitia, which states that, for a child, both a mother and father are,

“…necessary for a child’s integral and harmonious development.”

Pope Leo has spoken on this topic only a few times. The only occasion on which he addressed the LGBT issue as pontiff was during an interview with journalist Elise Ann Allen of the outlet Crux. On that occasion, he said that the Church welcomes everyone but would not change its doctrine.

POPE LEO XIV
I'm trying not to continue to polarize or promote polarization in the church and I'm trying to say, this is what Francis said very clearly when he would say, “todos, todos todos”, everyone is invited in. But I don't invite a person in because they are or are not of any specific identity. I invite a person in because as a son or daughter of God and say, you're all welcome and let's get to know one another and respect one another.

The Pope also emphasized the role of the family as a fundamental pillar of all society.
