It has been a few weeks since Pope Leo has made any statements to the media during his time at Castel Gandolfo.

Bot now, the Middle East—and the entire world—is experiencing extreme tension as missile strikes multiply each day following the military operations of the United States and Israel in Iran.

Having already warned against continued violence during the Sunday Angelus, the pope once again took the opportunity to make an urgent appeal for peace outside of Villa Barberini.

He said that we must:

“Pray for peace, work for peace, and strive to ensure there is less hatred.”

The Red Cross has already reported that in just the first few days more than 550 people have been killed in the Middle East as a result of the attacks.

Catholic reactions were swift. One of the first came from Archbishop Coakley, president of the U.S. bishops.

We are faced with the possibility of a tragedy of immense proportions. All nations, international bodies, and partners committed to peace must exert every effort to prevent further escalation.

Meanwhile, Bishop Aldo Berardi, the Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, issued a statement urging the faithful to remain calm and to act with caution during this fragile time.

Carefully follow the instructions of civil authorities and take all necessary precautions in your homes, workplaces, and parishes.”

Iranian missiles continue to strike Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, dragging each of these countries into a conflict that—unless the current course changes—is likely just beginning.
