One of the most moving moments of apostolic journeys is when the pope meets with the country’s local dioceses. See how they welcomed Pope Leo…

NATS (Pope’s entrance…) if possible, add a bit of music. If not, nothing.

They are the backbone of local Catholicism: priests, religious, catechists… And a papal visit is encouraging, especially in places where resources to sustain the Church are scarce.

The pope asked that they all remain united and close to the people in difficult moments, and always with humility.

POPE LEO XIV
Dear brothers and sisters, foster fraternity among yourselves with openness and transparency; do not give in to arrogance or self-referential attitudes; do not separate yourselves from the people, especially the poor; avoid the pursuit of privileges.

Pope Leo also recalled Angola’s history and its independence from Portugal, which came in 1975 after a long war of independence.

LEO XIV
In the past, you were courageous in denouncing the scourge of war, in supporting afflicted populations by remaining at their side, in building and rebuilding, and in pointing out paths and solutions to put an end to the armed conflict. Your contribution is widely recognized and appreciated. But this work is not finished.

The pope encouraged them to promote a reconciled memory to be passed on to future generations. He also invited them to follow the witness of faith of many Angolans and missionaries.

LEO XIV
It is therefore crucial that, by interpreting reality with wisdom, you do not give up denouncing injustices, offering proposals in accordance with Christian charity. Continue to be a generous Church that contributes to the integral development of your country.

The meeting took place at the Parish of Our Lady of Fátima, a church built by the Capuchin Franciscans in 1963.
