These moments you are seeing right now have been seen around the world...
They have been seen by political leaders like Trump and Zelensky, royalty from the world’s monarchies, the entire Roman Curia, and, of course, faithful from even the most remote places.
Pope Francis’s funeral Mass was a reflection of the world, with included people from all walks of life—great and small, powerful and poor alike.
One of the most moving moments was when Pope Francis's coffin left St. Peter's Basilica.
The funeral was presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Re, who recalled the gestures, messages, and legacy left by the Argentinian pope. Nearly half a million people attended.
After the funeral Mass, the procession carried
Pope Francis’s remains from St. Peter’s Basilica to Santa Maria Maggiore, one of Rome’s four major basilicas. The coffin was of course transported in the popemobile.
Pope Francis was called “a pope among the people.” And that’s how he said goodbye to the Eternal City—thousands of people crowded the streets of Rome to pay their final respects.
This is the burial ceremony for Pope Francis at Santa Maria Maggiore. It was presided over by the Camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell.
Pope Francis’s legacy lies in the simplicity of his gestures and his Franciscan spirit. He now rests forever besides the image of Salus Populi Romani, but his memory lives on in those who found comfort and hope in his papal paternity.
