On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Prevost was elected by his fellow cardinals as the new Pope of the Catholic Church.
His first public appearance took place on the day of the Supplication to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii. The Pope himself noted that he felt called to come here, to place his ministry under the protection of the Blessed Virgin.
Along the streets of Pompeii, Leo XIV was warmly welcomed by crowds eager to take part in a day that, a year earlier, had been promised to them.
