At St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV presided over the funeral Mass for Swiss Cardinal Paul Emil Tscherrig, who passed away on May 12 at the age of 79.
The pontiff paid tribute to the cardinal’s distinguished career, which broke new ground when he became the first foreign diplomat to head the Apostolic Nunciature to Italy and San Marino, serving from 2017 to 2024.
Pope Francis elevated him to the College of Cardinals on September 30, 2023, during the same consistory in which Robert Francis Prevost received the red biretta.
