Pope Leo XIV is back at work, though still from the hospital. On Thursday afternoon, the pope received Paolo Rudelli, the Substitute of the Secretariat of State.
On his second day of recovery following the operation, he had a restful night and got up to have breakfast as usual.
The most positive news comes from his personal physician and the surgeon in charge.
This morning, the Holy Father underwent routine checkups, which came back normal. The chest X-ray showed that the lung that underwent surgery is healing well. He has been carrying out his daily activities independently. The physical therapy session included a full range of motor activities.
His recovery has also allowed him to concelebrate Mass in a room set up on the tenth floor of the hospital. It did not take place in the usual chapel, as the papal apartment at Gemelli is still under renovation.
In addition, more details have emerged about the tests that preceded the surgery. The workup included a bronchoscopy with a robot-assisted biopsy, a PET scan, and a contrast-enhanced chest CT scan.
The Holy See has suspended the Pope's audiences and events through Tuesday, October 20. For now, doctors report that his postoperative recovery is proceeding normally.
