Pope Leo XIV took his first motorcade tour through the streets of Buenos Aires, accompanied by a mounted escort. It took place on his way from the "Monument to General San Martín and the Armies of Independence" to the Casa Rosada.
Upon his arrival, he was once again greeted by Javier Milei, with whom he held a private meeting, just minutes before traveling by car to the Palacio Libertad to deliver his speech to Argentine political leaders and civil society.
His predecessor, Pope Francis, never returned to Argentina after being elected pope in 2013. The last pontiff to visit the country was Saint Pope John Paul II nearly 40 years ago.
