On the third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, Pope Francis will grant a plenary indulgence.

It can also be given to those who visit, physically or virtually, the elderly who are needy, sick or disabled on July 23.

Pope Francis instituted this World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in 2021. Care for the elderly is an important issue for the Pope and he emphasizes the need to promote a dialogue between generations.

POPE FRANCIS
Please, bring your kids, young children, close to the elderly, always bring them close. And when the elderly person is ill, or can't think right, keep bringing them close, so that they may know that this is our flesh, this has made it possible for us to be here. Please do not keep the elderly far away.

The conditions to obtain the indulgence are to go to confession, receive communion and pray for the intentions of the pope. The plenary indulgence can also be offered for the salvation of a soul in purgatory.

Indulgences are either plenary or partial. Plenary because it fully removes the effect of the sins committed up to that moment. Partial if it removes part of it.

It is a great manifestation of mercy and compassion. The Church shows her motherhood by settling all debts and consequences of sin.

Elderly people who are unable to leave their homes and join in the Pope's prayers are also eligible for the indulgence. The Vatican has asked priests to make themselves available to hear confessions.
