On the Tenth Anniversary of the Encyclical Laudato Si’, the Vatican Continues Working Toward Integral Ecology. The Workshop of St. Peter’s Basilica has presented a plan to transform the basilica into a space of "zero environmental impact."

Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of the Basilica, explained that the goal is to make St. Peter’s a model site that aligns with the ecological message of Pope Francis.

The Vatican began moving toward an energy-saving plan several years ago. In fact, under Pope Francis, the first electric cars and charging stations were introduced. The goal is to replace all vehicles with electric ones by 2030.

The environmental plan is another step toward putting the encyclical Laudato Si’ into practice.

POPE FRANCIS
This encyclical is addressed to everyone: let us pray that all may receive its message and grow in responsibility toward the common home that God has entrusted to us.

The electric cars are not the only measure that's been taken. The Paul VI Audience Hall also has solar panels on its roof. Although installed in 2008, they were not sufficient to power the entire territory. For this reason, Pope Francis ordered the construction of an dual-use solar plant in an extraterritorial area of the Vatican, which is expected to supply the entire Vatican City State.
