At the Angelus held on the first Sunday of February in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV referred to the complicated situation between Cuba and the United States.

POPE LEO XIV
I have received with great concern the news of an increase in tensions between Cuba and the United States of America, two neighboring countries. I join the message of the Cuban bishops.

The message to which Pope Leo refers is the statement issued by the bishops of the Caribbean island, addressed to the authorities of both countries, in which they urged all those responsible to promote dialogue in order to prevent an increase in the suffering of the Cuban people.

Recent news, which announces, among other things, the elimination of any possibility for oil to enter the country, raises alarms, especially for the most disadvantaged.

Cuba needs changes, and they are increasingly urgent, but it does not need any more anguish or pain.
In addition, during the recitation of the Marian prayer, the Pope prayed for the more than 200 people who died in the Congo after the collapse of a mine.

POPE LEO XIV
I assure my prayers for the many victims of the collapse of a mine in North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. May the Lord sustain that people who suffer so greatly.

On the day marking the National Day of Civilian Victims of Wars and Conflicts around the world, the Pope lamented that all these deaths violate morality and human rights, and he expressed his hope for an end to this injustice.
