Pope Leo XIV had already indicated the possibility of traveling to Peru in 2026:
POPE LEO XIV: France, and then we’ll see.
ROME REPORTS: Peru soon?
POPE LEO XIV: Possible.
So it came as no big surprise when, after meeting the pope in a private audience, Peru's interim president, José María Balcázar, confirmed what Leo had only previously hinted at. The Vatican has not yet issued any official announcement.
According to the Peruvian president, it was the pope who suggested the visit would likely take place in early November. He also expressed great enthusiasm about returning to the country where he served for most of his missionary life.
The most probable destinations of the trip are, according to local media, Piura, Chiclayo, Cusco, Pucallpa, and Lima. The trip would likely last up to ten days. It is still undecided whether Pope Leo will combine the Peru visit with stops in other countries, such as Argentina or Uruguay.
