It is possible to pray using ChatGPT? Could AI influence the writing of homilies or the liturgy itself? If Jesus had been born in this day and age, would he use AI?
These are some of the questions posed to Monsignor Paul Tighe, a bishop who collaborated on the Claude AI model. He also participated on the Magnifica Humanitas encyclical by Pope Leo XIV.
On the subject of praying with AI, bishop Tighe distinguishes between using AI and becoming dependent on it.

AI could help me too. To find ways of thinking and reflecting and stimulation or suggestions of things to read, but ultimately, I have to keep my own agency and my own responsibility and my own sense of the openness to God's presence.
He also highlights its usefulness for finding scripture passages, which could help in writing homilies or meditations. Not at the expense of relinquishing responsibility or intellectual capacity.
As to whether or not Jesus would use AI, bishop Tighe says it would depend on where He was born.

Would he be in a position to use AI? Which would probably have everything to do with the socioeconomic and geographic context into which he might be born.
He references the vast disparities in the world, such as in the field of healthcare. There are plenty of medical services available to the rich, but few for the poor. AI promises a lot, yet the world still remains divided.
If Jesus had been a carpenter in the 21st century, he probably would have turned to Claude or Gemini to figure out how His new drill worked or to choose the best nails for certain planks. He wouldn’t have delegated the creativity, judgment, or work behind each project to AI.
