Vatican ambassador: Pope wants to visit Argentina, but there's no official confirmation

2014-05-19

Argentinians are hoping that Pope Francis will visit his native country in 2016, for the National Eucharistic Congress taking place in Tucuman

The Pope, who hasn't gone back to Argentina since being elected, has repeatedly expressed his intention to go. But at this point, it's too early to say.

JUAN PABLO CAFIERO
Argentina's Ambassador to the Holy See
"He wants to go to Argentina, but obviously we have to consider that we're not talking about your average Argentinian. He is the head of a Church with more than one billion people.”

Argentina's ambassador to the Holy See says that the Vatican considers the Pope's schedule on a year to year basis. Two years is way too early to confirm anything. Especially since a confirmation has not yet been given for the 2015 World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia

JUAN PABLO CAFIERO
Argentina's Ambassador to the Holy See
"When he was asked about whether or not he was going to Tucuman in Argentina, he nodded his head and said yes. He said the intention is there, but the confirmation is still pending and it looks like a date will continue to be pending for some time.”

Especially since there's plenty of other trips on the Pope's plate before. First the Holy Land at the end of May, then in August South Korea, followed by a visit to Sri Lanka in 2015
