The Pope will receive several Latin American presidents in June

2015-05-26

One month before Pope Francis visits Latin America, several heads of state from the region will meet with him at the Vatican.

At least four presidents will visit the Pope in the coming weeks. First will be the president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, on June 5th.

On June 7th, Pope Francis will first receive Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Later that day, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of Argentina will see the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires for the fifth time.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos will then come to the Vatican on June 15th, as the peace process in his country has reached a critical point. Rebels recently announced the end of five month truce, because 26 guerrillas fighters were killed by a Colombian Air Force bombing.

All four heads of state will be in Europe to participate in a summit in Brussels from June 10th to 11th. The meeting brings together leaders from the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean to strengthen ties between the continents.
