February 17, 2017. Pope Francis has sent an important message to the Meetings of Popular Movements that is taking place in Modesto (California). The pope denounces the "moral blindness of this indifference”: "under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

How to become a 21st century Roman gladiator

If you've ever been curious about what the lives of gladiators were like..now you can really know, thanks to this gladiator school.

Students learn what exactly these ancient Roman warriors were. Although these men who fought for their freedom did so as early as the 4th century BC, they're still remembered throughout the world.

Director of the Gladiator School
"The word 'gladiator' is a magic one that opens doors. It is a word known throughout the world. To feel what a gladiator felt, even if only for two hours, makes people very emotional.”

A small museum shows what gladiators brought with them to fight: armor, a spear, a shield and, of course, a sword.

Director of the Gladiator School
"If you give a boy the choice between a sword and a pistol, he will choose the sword. Because for him, the sword is the more powerful weapon and instinctively he will choose it. It is an invincible weapon.”

There are classes here throughout the year and others that only take place in the summer. These children from Israel have come to Rome for vacation. Instead of relaxing, they are training intensely because they want to fight like authentic gladiators.

"I think I enjoy the training the most. It's like this warm-up, and you have to run around this whole thing. And that was really fun. It was entertaining.”

"For me, it is my passion, it is a pleasure for me. When I look at my students, open their eyes and look at the face of happiness... I'm happy.”

They learned how to defend themselves and handle a sword. But now they face the greatest challenge: proving who is the best gladiator.
