The first greeting between Pope Francis and Donald Trump was marked by a prudent, but cordial tone.

'You're welcome.

'Thank you very much. It's a great honor.

Trump and the pope privately met for 30 minutes behind closed doors.

In these meetings gestures count more than the words exchanged. In particular, the pope's gifts sent a profound message.

'This is a medallion made by a Roman artist, with the olive tree as a symbol of peace. It has two branches. For there is the division of war, and the olive tree slowly makes peace.'

'We're going to use it. We could use peace.'

'It is my strongest desire that you can be an olive tree to make peace.

Donald Trump presented the first edition of  Martin Luther King's works as a gift to Pope Francis.

'These are books and some letters from Martin Luther King.'

Pope Francis joked with Melania about the Slovenia's typical dessert.

'Do you prepare 'potiza' for him'?

'What do you give him to eat?'

'Potiza.

The pope also greeted Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared, one of the top aids to the president.

It was a cordial encounter that ended with this handshake.

'Thank you. Thank you. I will not forget what you said. Thank you.

The Vatican spokesman was satisfied with the meeting, in which both sides recognized 'the common commitment to life and religious freedom and conscience. However, common ground was not established on every issue.

'There was also discussion about collaboration between the State and the Catholic Church in the United States, especially where the church is so engaged in fields of healthcare, education and assistance to immigrants.â?

President Trump met for almost an hour with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Parolin, whom he exchanged views with regarding 'the promotion of peace through political negotiation and interreligious dialogue, especially in the Middle East and with regard to the situation of Christian communities.

He then visited the Sistine Chapel with his wife and daughter.

He also entered St. Peter's Basilica, and made a special stop in front of Michelangelo's Pietí .

He also stood before the tomb of John Paul II.

Melania Trump caressed the foot of the statue of St. Peter as the pilgrims do.

Just like that, the closing of the basilica door also closed the first visit of Trump's visit to the Vatican as the President of the USA.
