Mercy should not be an abstract word but a 'lifestyle.â?  From St. Peter's, the Pope has called for people to 'roll up their sleevesâ? and put the concrete works of mercy in practice.

He said that one of the most serious evils that must be fought today is the indifference to the suffering of others.

POPE FRANCIS
'People who go through life without realizing the needs of others, without seeing the many spiritual and material needs of others are living a life less lived, these people do not serve others. Remember well: whoever does not live to serve, not serve to live.

The Pope warned that one of the dangers of the welfare culture is that you can lose sight of what is 'essential.

POPE FRANCIS
'What is the significance to look at the essential? Look at Jesus. Look at Jesus. See Jesus in those that are hungry, the imprisoned, the sick and those striped from their clothes. Someone who is unemployed and needs to provide for a family. These are the works that Jesus asks us to do. Find Jesus within them. Why? Because Jesus looks at me and the rest of us like that.

During the audience, he also recalled his recent trip to Armenia and spoke of his return visit to the region at the end of September. He will visit Georgia and Azerbaijan to 'appreciate their ancient Christian roots and promote peace and dialogue.
