Pope Francis prays for Cardinal Law in front of his remains

As is the custom, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, presided over the funeral of Cardinal Bernard Law.

The ceremony took place on the altar of St. Peter's Basilica, next to the cardinal's remains. The Gospels were placed on top of the casket.

Resident cardinals from Rome, basilica clerics and some ambassadors attended. Callista Gingrich, the new U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, was also present, along with her husband.

“Today, we want to bid farewell to the deceased Cardinal Bernard Francis Law.”

Following the mass, as is the case with any cardinal's funeral in the basilica, Pope Francis participated in the rite of the blessing of the remains before burial.
