Five years ago today, Benedict XVI ended his papacy

Among displays of affection by the entire Vatican and Eternal City, Benedict XVI ended his papacy five years ago today.

The pope emeritus went by helicopter to Castel Gandolfo for some rest. As he flew over Rome, the bells of St. Peter's Basilica and others throughout the city bid him a resounding farewell.

As the Vacant Seat began, Benedict enjoyed his repose in the papal summer residence.
