In traditional Malaysian clothing and with a big smile on his face, the new Malaysian ambassador handed over his credentials to the pope.

Westmoreland Anak Edward Palon was accompanied by his family who presented Pope Francis a colorful tapestry with a Malaysian design.

Pope Francis gave him a selection of his most important magisterial texts, as well as rosaries.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the ambassador's family had these three religious articles blessed by the pope.

Malaysia is a young country where Islam are a majority. The country re-established diplomatic relations with the Holy See in mid-2011.

Afterward, the pope and the new ambassador met privately to discuss issues of interest for both nations.
