The pope's eye surgery became public knowledge some time ago. He himself mentioned it in 2018 to the inmates at this Roman prison. He explained to them that with age come cataracts and the need for surgery. He announced the operation would take place in 2019.

The laser surgery took place some months ago without any serious complications. He only had to take a few hours off from his normal schedule and to apply eye drops during the recovery period.

The pope is well, as he told the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar two weeks ago.

“Health is good. The eye surgery went well.”

To respect the pope's privacy, and because the surgery was minor, the operation itself was not made public. Pope Francis assures it transpired without any problems.
