Angelo Becciu, prefect of the Causes of Saints, resigns from his cardinalate and his position

Surprisingly and with this brief statement, the Holy See has announced that Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Angelo Becciu from from his position and the cardinalate.

The cardinal ceases to be the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and also ceases to be a cardinal. The Holy See has not specified the reason for the resignation, although in recent months the cardinal was involved in a shady real estate operation in London.

Before heading the Causes of Saints, Msgr Becciu, 72, was the next in command after the Secretary of State.
