Pope entrusts Marcello Semeraro and Fridolin Ambongo with strategic tasks

Marcello Semeraro is the new prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

He is replacing Card. Angelo Becciu, who resigned last Sept. 24.

Until now, the new prefect was the secretary of the Council of Cardinals and the bishop of Albano, Italy.

The pope has also added Card. Fridolin Ambongo to the Council of Cardinals.

This Franciscan is the archbishop of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He will bring the African perspective to the pope's team of seven advisers, currently working on preparing the new norms that will govern the Vatican Curia. The pope also consults with them for other delicate matters.

The other members are Card. Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, the group coordinator; Secretary of State Pietro Parolin; the archbishop of Boston, Seán Patrick O'Malley; the archbishop of Mumbai, Oswald Gracias; the archbishop of Munich, Reinhard Marx; and the governor of Vatican City, Card. Giuseppe Bertello.
