In 2021, six cardinals will turn 80, at which age they will lose the right to participate in a future conclave.

The first is Gabriel Zubeir Wako, former archbishop of Khartoum, in Sudan. He will turn 80 on Feb. 27, 2021.

About a week later, on March 8, Wilfrid Napier, archbishop of Durban, in South Africa, will turn 80.

Then on June 8, Australian George Pell will cross the threshold. For years he was the prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy and a member of the Council of Cardinals.

On July 17, Maurice Piat, bishop of Port Louis, will turn 80. He welcomed the pope to Mauritius in September 2019.

On Aug. 18, Beniamino Stella will turn 80. He is the prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy and was the president of the Vatican's prestigious school of diplomacy.

The last of the new veterans will be Card. Angelo Scola. The former bishop of Milan and patriarch of Venice will lose his right to participate in a future conclave on Nov. 7.
