France's highest judicial body cleared Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of charges of covering abuse. He was accused of not reporting abuses perpetrated by Fr. Bernard Preynat in the 80s and 90s.

Cardinal Barbarin was issued a six-month suspended sentence in March 2019.

In January 2020 he was acquitted, and many abuse victims appealed the ruling to the French supreme court, which upheld the ruling.

After his original conviction, Cardinal Barbarin offered his resignation from the Archdiocese of Lyon to Pope Francis. The Pope accepted, and appointed an apostolic administrator to his position.
