On May 15, 2022, Pope Francis will canonize Charles de Foucauld, who introduced the faith to the Tuareg people.

The last canonization the Pope celebrated was on Oct. 13, 2019.

The Vatican had announced Charles de Foucauld's canonization, but had not set a date because of the pandemic.

Charles de Foucauld lived between the 19th and early 20th centuries. He left his native France to evangelize among the Tuareg people in the Sahara.

FRANÇOIS VAYNE
Expert, Blessed Charles de Foucauld
“He went to live his vocation along with the poor from south Algeria. He learned their language, Tuareg and made the first Tuareg-French dictionary to understand their culture and language better.”

At the same ceremony on May 15, Pope Francis will canonize another six blesseds.

Among them is a layman from India, Devasahayam Pillai. He was a military man in the 18th century. He was killed for converting to Christianity.
