Pope Francis visits Assisi to meet with the poor. He travels there as a pilgrim, which is why the first thing he was given upon his arrival was the cloak and walking stick typically used by pilgrims. The Pope used the staff to walk all the way up to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels.

The Pope wanted to the birthplace of St. Francis to prepare for the Fifth World Day of the Poor, which will be observed on Sunday, November 14th.
