Jewelry startup to pay for World Youth Day trip grows into a family business

Lucía and María Suárez are sisters. In 2016, they began selling bracelets in their native Spain to pay for the trip to World Youth Day in Krakow. Now, five years later, their brand has earned them a meeting with the Pope and allowed them to support their family during the pandemic lockdown.

“We did this for WYD, but it also gave us the opportunity to meet the Pope. And afterward, my sister and I spent a lot of time together doing something we enjoyed, and it strengthened our relationship.”

They began by selling bracelets, Nativity scenes and gift boxes for Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day at their parish. Word spread among their friends and Instagram, and they now have thousands of followers.

“It got people's attention on social media, and people liked our work. So we decided to continue with this project. It was like a hobby. We continued studying while making money on the side, because the financial situation at home wasn't great. So it was also a way to help our parents.”

Lucía and María stopped making Nativity scenes and focused instead on necklaces, earrings and rings. Their brand has continued to grow, and today they also design blazers, vests, dresses and much more.

The project began as a way to raise money to attend World Youth Day. But it's grown into something much bigger, transforming these Spanish sisters into inseparable entrepreneurs.
