Pope Francis made an appeal for International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is being celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 27. He asked to raise awareness among young people about the horror of that period in history.

POPE FRANCIS
'We must remember the extermination of millions of Jews and people of different nationalities and religious faiths. This unspeakable cruelty must never repeat itself! It must not be forgotten, so that we can build a future where human dignity is not trodden upon.'

Among those invited to the General Audience was Lidia Maksymowicz, who was deported to Auschwitz when she was only three years old, and used for experiments.

-'She wrote a book for which you wrote the preface. Today she will share this incredible story in the Senate building.'

The survivor also brought a painting immortalizing her first encounter with the Pope, in May of 2021. Pope Francis had respectfully kissed the prisoner's number tattooed on her arm.
