Pope Francis met with members of the Italian Leather Chemists Association at the Vatican. In a brief introduction, the President of the Association explained that these chemists treat leather which is then used to make products like shoes, bags, belts and wallets.

The Pope, who studied chemistry when he was younger, asked those present to promote environmentally friendly practices in their work.

POPE FRANCIS
'You, too, are called to make your specific contribution to caring for the common home. And you can do so precisely in the way you go about your work. For this, it's very valuable to be part of an association, because you bring together knowledge, experience, and legal and technical updates.'

Pope Francis also expressed his concern for workers and families who are experiencing hardship because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

POPE FRANCIS
'But the pandemic cannot and should not become an excuse to justify gaps in justice and security. Rather, the crisis can be faced as an opportunity to grow together in solidarity and work quality.'

The Pope encouraged those present to continue to grow together in social and ecological responsibility. The meeting concluded with a group picture.
