During the Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square, the Pope explained the words of Jesus in St. Luke's Gospel when he says: 'I am the gate: whoever enters through me will be saved.'

He means that to enter into the life of God, into salvation, one must pass through Him—not through someone else—through Him. They must welcome Him and His word. Just as to enter the city it was necessary to 'measure oneself' with the only narrow door that remained open, the Christian's life is 'tailored to Christ', founded and modeled on Him.
The Pope also explained that this 'narrow gate' does not mean that salvation is only for a few or for perfect people. He insisted that it is for everyone and it only asks for some sacrifices.

Entering into the project of life that God proposes to us requires narrowing the space for selfishness, reducing the presumption of self-sufficiency, minimizing the presence of pride and arrogance, and overcoming laziness in order to take the risk of love, even when it involves the cross.
The Pope concluded by asking pilgrims which door they would choose: that of themselves or that of Jesus Christ. He encouraged them by saying that, if they chose the latter, Our Lady would help them.
