In a liturgical ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis appointed 20 new cardinals.
Cardinal Fernando Vérgez became the sixth Spanish cardinal elector and the eighth in the College of Cardinals. He is also the first Legionary of Christ.
Ordained a priest in 1969, Cardinal Vérgez moved to the Roman Curia in 1972 where he continues to serve today. In 2021, Pope Francis appointed him Titular archbishop of Villamagna in Pronconsulari.
