To celebrate the 150th anniversary of their magazine, “World and Mission,” Pope Francis met with members of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions in the Apostolic Palace.

The magazine, founded in 1872, chronicles the life of the Church in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania. The goal, especially in recent years, has been to give a voice to those on the peripheries.

POPE FRANCIS
So many wanted to read the stories of the heroic missionaries, to feel close to them and their works, accompany them with prayer. And they also wanted to learn about countries and cultures in a different way than the more common one.

During the audience, Pope Francis expressed the importance of the magazine as it breaks down the geographical barriers that often separate people and encourage people to foster dialogue and friendship with those different from them.

The Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions was founded in 1850 as the first missionary institute from Italy. It is dedicated to providing humanitarian aid to people around the world, especially those socially and geographically marginalized.
