Overlooking the city of Marseille, Pope Francis launched an appeal in front of the monument dedicated to sailors and migrants who died in the Mediterranean. He asked for aid and assistance for those who risk their lives trying to cross the sea to reach Europe.
The Pope recalled that every one of the lives lost are not simply numbers but individual people with names, faces and stories. And he pointed out that the migrants and refugees who died represent broken lives and dreams.
Before departing, Pope Francis left flowers at the foot of the memorial. The memorial, made of bronze, depicts three sailors. It shows one of them swept away by a wave that overtook the ship.
