Pope Francis met with the Vatican department that he created himself nine years ago—it is the Office of the Auditor General, in charge of fighting corruption and keeping tabs on finances.

But the Pope did not read his prepared remarks to the few staffers present. And the Vatican did not provide reasoning for this in their statement or release video of the meeting.

In his prepared speech that was passed out to the meeting attendees, the Pope emphasized the importance of independence, professionalism and fighting corruption. He said,

Certainly those who work at the Holy See and the Vatican City State do so faithfully and honestly, but the lure of corruption is so dangerous that we must be very vigilant.

But the Auditor Office itself has not been free of turmoil. The former Vatican Auditor General, Libero Milone, was fired in 2017 for allegedy overstepping his role. Now he is suing the Vatican for nearly 10 million dollars, claiming unfair dismissal from his job.

LIBERO MILONE
Former Vatican Auditor General

I always acted within the framework of the rules dictated by the charter and by the Holy Father, who was my only superior.
What had we gotten close to? That is the question. What had we seen or thought that we had seen that was causing problems there.

Milone's final lawsuit hearing took place in October and a verdict is expected before Christmas.
