It has been one year since these images were taken. After the emotion of the last farewell to Pope Benedict XVI, his personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein, has returned to the Vatican. There, he celebrated an anniversary Mass and recalled the legacy of the pope emeritus.

We can synthesize his mark in the last three words he pronounced: “Lord, I love you.” It means that Benedict remains in our memory as a humble, intelligent and believing pope. And the more we look at his great intellectual production, his writing, the more we discover the richness and generosity of his theology, which nourishes and will nourish the personal life of everyone who reads Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict.

Visibly moved by the memory of the pope emeritus, Archbishop Ganswein has no doubts about his future consideration of sainthood.

It is my desire but also my conviction that the life he lived and also what he wrote, what he witnessed, deserves an opening of the cause of canonization. But even then after that, the richness of his theology or his theological writings lead to the goal of becoming a Doctor of the Church.

But the process of canonization is one that must always respect the internal procedures of the Church.

It is something that depends on Pope Francis. We know that there is a five year waiting period and then the process can begin. I don't know what stage it is at. There is a waiting time, but there is also a desire to move forward.

Archbishop Ganswein made these statements after speaking at a forum organized at the Vatican by the television network EWTN, in collaboration with the Joseph Ratzinger Foundation.
