Pope Francis met with members of the Catholic Church from Nigeria, which is a country that faces some of the most extreme Christian persecution in the world.

The group he addressed is a community of Nigerians who currently live in Rome. In his message, the Pope encouraged them not to isolate themselves but to view their culture as a gift and embrace unity.

POPE FRANCIS
Finally, dear brothers and sisters, dialogue. Unfortunately, many regions of the world are experiencing conflict and suffering, and Nigeria is also experiencing a time of difficulty. In assuring you of my prayers for the security, unity and spiritual and economic progress of your nation, I urge everyone to foster dialogue and to listen to each other with an open heart, excluding no one politically, socially or religiously.

Nigeria continues to face serious social and economic challenges. Over 4,000 people were reported to have been kidnapped in the country in 2023 alone. And over 95 million Nigerians are currently living in poverty. In the face of this suffering, Pope Francis encouraged Rome's Nigerian community to communicate with one another and work towards reconciliation.

Before closing, he extended his blessing over the group.
